Father Damien Karras is a central character in the horror film The Exorcist (1973), adapted from William Peter Blatty's novel.
Karras, played by Jason Miller, is a Jesuit psychiatrist grappling with a crisis of faith exacerbated by his mother's declining health and eventual death. His psychological expertise is sought when young Regan MacNeil exhibits disturbing behavior.
Initially skeptical, Karras investigates Regan's case, ultimately concluding that she is possessed. He then requests permission from the Catholic Church to perform an exorcism, facing considerable resistance due to his own wavering belief.
During the exorcism, Karras bravely confronts the demon Pazuzu, eventually sacrificing himself to save Regan by provoking the demon to possess him and then throwing himself out of a window.
